Maarja Nuut

Maarja Nuut is a violinist and singer from Rakvere, Estonia, associated with contemporary folk, ambient and minimalist music. She is also linked with folk, experimental and freak folk traditions through her work with old village songs, dance patterns and improvised textures.

Background and approach

Her music grows out of the traditions of northern Estonian village musicians, especially the Viru region, where she draws on old tunes and songs as a basis for new work. She also takes interest in Indian ragas and in the structured, energetic patterns of folk dance. Her playing uses the violin’s range of timbre and nuance, together with voice, to create music that stays close to tradition while reworking it into a more present-day form.

Nuut’s style is described as precise and minimal, but also energetic and perceptive. Her pieces often evoke natural imagery and a sense of movement across landscapes, balancing control with a feeling of dance and motion.

Projects and collaborations

Alongside her solo work, Nuut performs in the group Knihv. She also works with the international ensemble Ethno in Transit, which she performs with in Europe and Australia. The group name Knihv and the collaborative project Maarja Nuut & Ruum are both associated with her work.

Recordings

Her first CD, Soolo, appears in 2013. The title reflects the solo nature of the recording, though the music is presented as open and dialogic rather than closed or isolated. It is built from her own musical approach to traditional material and serves as an example of her interest in using folk music as a way to develop intuition and understanding of the world.
