Lowdown Brass Band

Lowdown Brass Band is a brass group from Chicago. It forms in 2006 and works with a horn-led lineup rooted in the New Orleans second line tradition. The band combines trumpets, trombones, saxophones and sousaphone with drums, and its arrangements centre on tight lead lines, call-and-response sections and strongly rhythmic brass parts.

The group’s sound draws on jazz and blues while also bringing in funk, hip-hop, reggae and pop. It performs original compositions rather than only covering existing material, and its music is built to push both players and listeners. The band includes Matthew Davis.

Lowdown Brass Band releases a self-titled album in 2008.
