Lovvers
Lovvers are a punk and noise rock group from Nottingham, United Kingdom. They form in 2005 and remain active, with Shaun Hencher listed as a member. Their sound is described through references to lo-fi punk, noise, indie, and bands such as the Germs, Flipper, Wipers and The Replacements, placing them in a rough, noisy lineage that also carries pop melody and a careless attitude.
Background and style
The band draw on the “blank generation” spirit associated with late-1970s punk, alongside the heaviness and weirdness of American underground rock. Their music sits between lo-fi, punk, noise and indie, with an emphasis on raw performance rather than polish. They are also presented as a band that resists simple categorisation.
Activity and live work
Lovvers tour extensively across the UK and play nearly 200 shows within two years. They also share bills with a wide range of other acts, including Butthole Surfers, Abe Vigoda, No Age, Times New Viking, Jay Reatard, Awesome Color, Mika Miko, Fucked Up, Black Lips and Brutal Knights.
Recordings
Their releases include the CD/R CD/R in 2006, the 7" Lovvers in 2007, Near Enough For Jazz / Special Needs in 2007, Laughing Man / Search For Gold in 2008, Think on 12" and CD in 2008, OCD GO GO GIRLS / 100 FLOWERS in 2009, OCD GO GO GO GIRLS on LP and CD in 2009, STRANGERS in 2010, and Endless Bummer Surf Compilation Cassette in 2010. Their first full-length album, OCD GO GO GO GIRLS, is released on Wichita Records.
Press and reception
Lovvers are written about or featured in a number of major music magazines, although their coverage is described as missing the point of the band’s context and intent. The group is portrayed as difficult to define within standard genre labels or branding.
