Lost Dogs

Lost Dogs are a United States alternative country, americana and christian rock group that begins in 1991 as a one-off collaboration between four vocalists and songwriters from different bands. The core lineup includes Terry Scott Taylor, Gene Eugene, Derri Daugherty and Michael Roe, later joined by Steve Hindalong as an official member; the group is also associated with Burleigh Drummond. They are often described as a country music supergroup, although they identify themselves as a roots and alternative music group.

Formation and background

The band forms at the request of their label and brings together Taylor from Daniel Amos and the Swirling Eddies, Eugene from Adam Again, Daugherty from The Choir, and Roe from The 77s. Their work draws on traditional American music, including country, folk, blues and rock, while keeping a modern sound.

Albums, covers and style

Over the course of the 1990s and 2000s, Lost Dogs release nine albums. Their recordings often include cover versions and traditional or gospel material, alongside original songs. Songs they cover include Bob Dylan’s “Lord, Protect My Child,” Leonard Cohen’s “If It Be Your Will,” The Beatles’ “I’m A Loser,” and Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times Come Again No More.” They also record “Dust On The Bible” and “Farther Along,” among other standards.

Live work and later releases

The band’s concerts are known for between-song humour, with the members exchanging jokes and one-liners, often at each other’s expense. After Gene Eugene dies in 2000, the remaining members continue to tour and record. In 2003 they release their first DVD, Via Chicago, followed by Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid) in 2006. In 2004 they work with Steve Hindalong on Mutt, an acoustic set of reworked songs from their regular bands plus one new song. They later release Island Dreams, which is mostly instrumental, and Old Angel in 2010.
