London Afrobeat Collective
London Afrobeat Collective is a London-based group playing afrobeat with elements of funk, world music and jazz. The band draws on the philosophy associated with Fela Kuti while combining it with a wide range of contemporary sounds. Its line-up includes members from different countries, giving the group an international character.
Style and recordings
The group’s sound mixes roots afrobeat, heavy funk bass, psych-rock and brass-led arrangements. Its self-financed debut album, LAC, appears in 2010 and includes guest contributions from Inemo Samiama and Dele Sosimi. In 2012 the group releases the single “Occupy”, which has a dubstep-influenced edge.
Live work and recognition
London Afrobeat Collective appears at major festival and live music events including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Green Man and Shambala, as well as venues across London. Its Glastonbury 2011 performances follow a personal invitation from Michael Eavis. The group also counts DJ Craig Charles and Bombay Bicycle Club among its supporters.
