Lodger
Lodger is an indie rock band from Helsinki, Finland, formed by Teemu Merilä in 2002. The group remains active and is known for combining indie rock with a strong visual identity, especially through flash music videos that help build a cult following online.
Career
The band first gains wider attention through its early video for “Doorsteps”, followed by later videos that are designed by lyricist Hannes Häyhä. Their online profile grows further with the flash video “I Love Death”, which becomes their best-known breakthrough, and is followed by “God Has Rejected The Western World” and “24h Candy Machine”.
Lodger’s first album, Hi-Fi High Lights Down Low, is difficult to find in record shops and is sold online. The second album, How Vulgar, receives a mixed response, while songs such as “Friends” and “Brunswick Centre” stand out among the group’s best-known tracks. Their third album, Honeymoon Is Over, is described by Merilä as a stronger follow-up to How Vulgar, and it has a harsher sound than the band’s earlier material.
The band’s live activity includes a small US tour in 2007, and there is also mention of a possible UK trip in the same year. Its internet presence includes dedicated sites for videos and updates.
Related act
The name Lodger is also used by a separate late-1990s indie supergroup made up of Danny Goffey of Supergrass, Pearl Lowe of Powder, and Neil Carlill and Will Foster of Delicatessen. That group releases one album, A Walk in the Park, in 1998.
