Liturgy

Liturgy is a Brooklyn, New York black metal group active since 2004. The project begins as the solo work of Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix and expands into a four-piece in 2008 after the release of the 12-inch Immortal Life. The band identifies its approach as “transcendental black metal”, a term associated with a declaration written by Hunt-Hendrix.

Background and style

The group emerges from Brooklyn’s experimental metal scene and is described as an avant-garde black metal band. Its listed musical range also includes avant-garde metal, blackgaze, classical and contemporary classical elements. The band’s sound is closely tied to the “transcendental black metal” idea that Hunt-Hendrix develops for the project.

Releases

Liturgy’s debut album, Renihilation, appears in 2009. It is followed by Aesthethica in 2011, The Ark Work in 2015, H.A.Q.Q. in 2019, and Origin of the Alimonies in 2020. These releases mark the band’s progression from its early solo-project form to a larger and more established group identity.

Members and related work

Current and associated members include Haela Raveena Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Fox, Tyler Dusenbury, Bernard Gann, Tia Vincent-Clark, Leo Didkovsky, Mario Miron, Nikolai Tarsinov and Mo Miller. Hunt-Hendrix also has a background in the screamo group Birthday Boyz and in Holy Wars.
