Last Dinosaurs
Last Dinosaurs are an indie rock group from Brisbane, Australia. They form in 2007 and are active from 2008 onwards. The group includes Lachlan Caskey, Sean Caskey, Michael Sloane, Sam Gethin-Jones and Dan Koyama.
Formation and name
The band begins with Sean Caskey and Dan Koyama meeting at high school and discovering a shared interest in music. Lachlan Caskey later joins, along with Sam Gethin-Jones on bass. The group takes its name from the song “Last Dinosaur” by the Japanese rock band The Pillows.
Line-up and roles
Sean Caskey and Lachlan Caskey share lead and backing vocals as well as guitar duties. Dan Koyama plays drums, while Michael Sloane plays bass. Sam Gethin-Jones is also listed among the members.
Releases and style
Last Dinosaurs release their debut EP, Back from the Dead, in 2010, followed by their first studio album, In a Million Years, in 2012. Both receive praise from Australian media, including Triple J. Their second album, Wellness, follows in 2015, preceded by the singles “Evie” and “Apollo”. Their third album, Yumeno Garden, appears in 2018 after the singles “Dominos” and “Eleven”.
Yumeno Garden is largely self-produced and marks a move away from the band’s earlier big-budget production approach. The album is split between the two Caskey brothers, with Sean performing the first half and Lachlan the second. Lachlan also reworks older songs he uploads under the alias Notes From Under Ground.
Later albums and singles
The band releases the standalone singles “FMU” in 2019 and “Flying” in 2020. “Flying” moves towards a nu-disco sound. In 2022, Last Dinosaurs release From Mexico With Love, a self-produced album made with producer James Angus. It is preceded by the singles “Collect Call”, “Look Back”, “CDMX”, “The Hating”, “Auto-Sabotage” and “Put Up With The Weather!”. The album is written by Lachlan in Mexico during 2020 while the other members are in Australia, and Lachlan sings on nearly all of the tracks.
The band’s fifth album, KYORYU, follows in 2024.
Labels
Last Dinosaurs are signed in Australia to Dew Process and in the UK to Fiction Records. Their recordings are distributed internationally through Universal Music Group.
