Laid Blak

Laid Blak is a UK reggae group formed in Bristol through the partnership of producer DJ Bunjy and MC Joe Peng. The project begins as a studio-based collaboration and develops into a live act featuring musicians from Bristol. Joe Peng, one of the founders, comes from the jungle scene and performs at the front of the stage with Flex, whose vocal delivery and stage presence are a central part of the group’s live setup.

Style and live performance

The group’s sound sits mainly in urban reggae, with elements of jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop. Their performances are noted for strong vocal presence, musical dexterity and an emphasis on danceable rhythms. They are also associated with dubstep, dub and ska.

Career highlights

Laid Blak supports artists including Desmond Dekker, Nitin Sawhney, Julian Marley, John Legend and Luciano. They appear at major UK events such as Glastonbury, Ashton Court Festival, In The City Urban events and carnivals across the country. Their track “Burnin” features on Tricky presents Brown Punk.
