La Bottine Souriante
La Bottine Souriante is a folk band from Quebec that specialises in traditional Quebecois music, often with a modern arrangement style. The group forms in 1976 and tours extensively in North America and Europe.
Its sound centres on traditional instruments including accordion, fiddle, guitar, piano and double bass. In 1990, the band adds a four-piece horn section, bringing a jazz element into the music. The group’s name means “the smiling boot” and refers to the look of a work boot with worn-out soles.
La Bottine Souriante contributes a song to Fire in the Kitchen, a Canadian Celtic music compilation by The Chieftains, in 1998. The band receives three Juno Awards and several Félix Awards from the Quebec recording industry. It is also known for high-energy live performances and wins Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2000. BBC Radio 3 also plays its music on mainstream programmes.
