L7

L7 are an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1985 and active to the present. They are associated with punk and grunge, and have also been linked with riot grrrl because of their all-female lineup and their place in the wider Los Angeles alternative rock scene.

Line-up and formation

The band is founded by Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks. Its longest-standing lineup includes Gardner, Sparks, Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas. Other members across the band’s history include Roy Koutsky, Anne Anderson, Greta Brinkman, Gail Greenwood, Janis Tanaka and Tsuzumi Okai.

Style and influence

L7’s sound combines punk energy with grunge heaviness. Their music draws on the raw power of Suzi Quatro, the directness of the Ramones and the confrontational attitude of Black Flag. They emerge in a male-dominated scene and are known for a forceful, anti-establishment approach.

Key songs and recognition

Their best-known track, “Pretend We’re Dead”, becomes an alternative rock standard in the early 1990s. It receives heavy radio play and reaches the Top 10 of the Billboard Modern Rock chart. L7 also gain attention for unpredictable live performances.

Activism and legacy

The band founds Rock for Choice in 1991, organising pro-choice benefit concerts. Their legacy is later documented in the 2016 film L7: Pretend We’re Dead. L7 influence a range of later acts and remain closely associated with the history of US punk rock.

Record labels

They record for Epitaph and Blackheart Records.
