Kinny is the stage name of Caitlin Simpson, a singer born in Canada and of Jamaican and Native American heritage. She is classically trained in opera, but her strongest early musical interests are reggae and jazz. A period of touring with a reggae group leads her to Norway, where she settles and meets Espen, beginning the partnership that shapes her early work.

Career

After the release of her album, Kinny becomes a regular live performer in the UK, appearing at venues and events including The Big Chill, Cargo, Jazz Café, Concorde 2 and Native, as well as at dates across Europe. These performances also bring her into contact with a range of producers, which expands her work as a collaborator and songwriter.

One of her early recorded collaborations is a track with TM Juke on his Forward album. She later works with Nostalgia 77, Hint, Diesler and Quantic, and she is also asked to write lyrics and record for Massive Attack. Her songs are noted for the warmth and personality she brings to them, and for the way her vocal background and collaborative approach shape her work in soul, nu-jazz, jazz and electronic settings.
