King Hannah

King Hannah is an indie rock band from Liverpool, United Kingdom, active since 2017. The group is made up of Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle and is associated with indie rock, rock and shoegaze.

Formation

The band forms around Merrick and Whittle’s early collaboration in Liverpool. Whittle first sees Merrick perform at a university showcase. Some time later, after Whittle starts working in a bar, Merrick shows him how to clean tables, and he spends the following months trying to persuade her to jam. They begin meeting at Whittle’s house before work, and Merrick initially hesitates to play her own music for him. After about a year of this routine, they begin writing songs together and find the partnership working well.

Recording and release

King Hannah self-release Crème Brûlée in 2019.

Musical identity

The group’s sound sits within indie rock and shoegaze, with a broader rock base. Merrick and Whittle describe their writing as a close partnership, with Merrick bringing chords and lyrics and Whittle responding instinctively to them.
