King Eider
King Eider is a progressive rock group active since 2012, based in the United Kingdom and associated with Scotland. The name comes from an Arctic duck.
Line-up and related projects
The project centres on Derk-Evert Waalkens, who plays keyboards and drums and provides backing vocals, and Hans Gerritse, who plays electric and acoustic guitars, guitar synth, bass and backing vocals. Gerritse also performs in the Dutch band Nice Beaver. Guest musicians on the recorded material include Dik Pomp on drums, plus vocalists Rinie Huigen, who previously plays in Cliffhanger and now in Knight Area, and Eric Holdtman.
Style and recording
King Eider’s debut release, Somateria Spectabilis, draws on 1970s symphonic rock and also includes neo-prog elements. Its sound uses a range of keyboards, including synthesizers, organ, piano and Mellotron samples, alongside guitar work that is described as expressive and Latimer-influenced. The music is linked to the broader progressive rock tradition associated with bands such as Camel, Genesis and Pink Floyd.
