King Creosote & Jon Hopkins
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins is a collaboration between Scottish singer-songwriter King Creosote and English electronic musician Jon Hopkins. The project is associated with folk and electronic music, and it brings together King Creosote’s songs and Hopkins’ production and arrangements.
Diamond Mine
In 2011, the pair release Diamond Mine, an album built around King Creosote’s lyrics and vocals set against backdrops arranged and recorded by Jon Hopkins. The record develops over a number of years, with the two working together whenever they can meet rather than under fixed deadlines. It draws on obscure songs from King Creosote’s back catalogue, reinterpreting material from the previous two decades.
The album is intended to be heard as a single continuous work, with instrumental passages given as much weight as the songs with lyrics. Its mood ranges from bleakness to renewal, and it is described by King Creosote as a soundtrack to an imagined life in a Scottish coastal village. The record also incorporates details of Fife life, including bike wheels, spring tides, tea cups and café chatter.
