Kid Sister

Kid Sister is the stage name of Melisa Young, a rap artist based in Chicago, Illinois. She is born in 1980 and is from Markham, United States. Her music sits at the intersection of hip hop and electronic styles, with later descriptions also placing her within hip hop and neo soul.

Early career

She starts rapping in October 2005 and becomes an MC at monthly dance parties hosted by the DJ duo Flosstradamus. The duo appear in MTV's My Block in the same year. She later appears on URB's The Next 1000 cover in April 2007.

Recordings and collaborations

Kid Sister signs to Fool's Gold, the label run by A-Trak, and releases her first single, "Pro Nails", which features Kanye West. The track is later re-released by Downtown Records. She also appears on Tittsworth's "WTF" from the album 12 Steps, alongside Pase Rock, and finishes a mixtape with A-Trak.

Ultraviolet and later work

Her debut studio album is titled Ultraviolet, after earlier being called Dream Date. The album includes production from Rusko, The Count and Sinden, XXXChange, and Brian Kennedy, and features Estelle. She and Estelle also collaborate on "First Ladies", a remake of Queen Latifah's "Step" from All Hail the Queen. Another single from the album is "Right Hand Hi", produced by Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia. Her song "Control" appears in the video game DJ Hero alongside Rihanna's "Disturbia".

Other background

She holds a degree in film from Columbia College Chicago and works on two independent feature films while studying: The Guys and Best Thief In the World. She also works at Bath & Body Works, which she references in interviews and creative work. She speaks publicly about financial hardship before her success and about her mixed African American, Native American and Caucasian background.
