Kevin Devine is a US singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York, working in alternative rock, folk rock and indie rock. His songs often combine introspective writing with political themes, and his arrangements are built around melodic acoustic guitar.

Background

Born in 1979, Devine grows up in Brooklyn and Staten Island and also spends significant time in Manhattan and Queens. He graduates from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 2001 with a degree in journalism. Before establishing his solo profile, he plays in the Staten Island band Delusion and later joins the indie/punk/emo group Miracle of 86, named after the New York Mets championship season.

Recording and releases

Devine records for Immigrant Sun Records and Triple Crown Records, and he also releases music through Devinyl Records. He works with Brooklyn producer Mike Skinner, who is credited as drummer on his solo records and is also the drummer for Miracle of 86. His 2003 album Make the Clocks Move brings him wider attention. He signs to Capitol Records for Put Your Ghost to Rest, which appears as his fourth album, and the record is later reissued by Procrastinate! Music Traitors. He also announces Brother's Blood for release on Favorite Gentlemen Records and issues the I Could Be With Anyone EP in the same period.

Touring and collaborations

Devine builds a larger following through touring with Brand New, first as support on their spring 2004 tour and later again in 2006 and on their 2007 spring tour with Manchester Orchestra. He also appears as a surprise opening act at the Triple Crown Records 10th Anniversary Concert. Other touring partners include Jesse Lacey, Grace Read, Chin Up Chin Up, Andy Hull, Owen, Jenny Owen Youngs, Tournaments, Rachael Yamagata and Matt Pryor. He also spends time touring in Europe and Germany.

His associated acts include Miracle of 86, Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band, The Side Eyes and Funambulist. Devine names Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Guns N' Roses, Brother Paramo and Nirvana among his influences.

Other activity

While at Fordham, he develops his acoustic solo performance through open-mic nights and college events, and he also performs regular sets at the Wetlands Preserve. He posts numerous demos on MySpace in late 2007 and early 2008.
