Kerri Chandler is a house and deep house DJ and producer from East Orange, United States, born in 1969. He is associated with dance, deep house, garage house and house, and is linked to a number of projects and aliases including UFP, Sfere, Bassmental, One World, Art of Origin, Jerome Sydenham and Kerri Chandler, Gate-Ah, The Songstress and Afro Elements. He also records on Madhouse Records and Sfere.

Background

Chandler grows up in New Jersey during the period of the Zanzibar club and resident DJ Tony Humpries. His father is also a DJ, giving him an early connection to the New York underground sound, including what is often called garage music.

Early DJ and production work

He makes his DJ debut at the Rally Record Club in East Orange when he is thirteen. He later becomes interested in production and begins making his own tracks on his self-label, Express Records. In 1991, Atlantic Records signs his debut single, “SuperLover/Get It Off.”

Selected releases

Chandler remains closely associated with underground house through releases such as the “Atmosphere E.P.” on Shelter Records and the album A Basement, Redlight and A Feeling on Madhouse. His work is described as combining vocals, rhythms and instruments with precise arrangement, alongside basslines, hooks, horn hits, synthesizer washes and choruses that create a distinctive garage-influenced sound.
