Kaya Project

Kaya Project is the ambient and downtempo world-fusion project of London-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Seb Taylor. Taylor also records as Shakta, Digitalis and Hibernation, and he is a co-founder of Angel Tears.

Style and approach

The project combines world music and electronica, using original recordings from locations around the world. Its material draws on studio sessions and field recordings collected across Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, giving the music a broad mix of ambient, dub, psybient and electronic elements.

Releases and labels

Kaya Project has released fourteen albums, with most of them issued on the Canadian label Interchill Records. The project also appears on compilations including Claude Challe’s Buddha Bar series and Six Degrees’ World Traveler series.

Live line-up and collaborators

For live performances, Seb Taylor is regularly joined by a rotating group of musicians. Among the regular contributors are Russian vocalist Irina Mikhailova, who sings on the first Kaya Project track and appears across the project’s albums, Shahin Badar, and Turkish ney player Omar Faruk Tekbilek.

Media appearances

Tracks by Kaya Project have been used on the television series Sleeper Cell. Angel Tears, another of Taylor’s collaborative projects, also appears on television, including Sex & the City and The West Wing.
