Karen Gwyer is an experimental techno producer from Iowa, later raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, who settles in London. Her work draws on techno, ambient, glitch and abstract pop, and it is often built on analog synthesizers, with warm drones, melodic synth pads, light percussion and ethereal vocals.

Career

Gwyer’s first release is the 2012 EP I’ve Been You Twice, issued on Patten’s Kaleidoscope label. In 2013 she releases her debut album, Needs Continuum, on No Pain in Pop. That label also issues Cowboys (For Karen), a collaboration with Torn Hawk, in the same year.

She continues to work through a sequence of releases across independent labels. Opal Tapes issues the cassette Kiki the Wormhole, and No Pain in Pop follows with the New Roof EP in 2014. In 2015 she releases the acid techno-leaning Bouloman EP on Nous.

In 2016, Kiki the Wormhole appears on vinyl through Public House Recordings, and Gwyer issues a split 12-inch with Beatrice Dillon on Alien Jams. Her double LP Rembo is released by Don’t Be Afraid in 2017.

Touring and collaborations

Gwyer tours Europe with several Opal Tapes artists, including Basic House and 1991. Her recorded collaborations include work with Torn Hawk and Beatrice Dillon.

Style

Her music is described as fluid and amorphous, combining experimental techno with spacy, abstract-pop elements. It is primarily composed on analog synthesizers and often balances driving rhythm with droning, expressive melodic textures.
