Joyce

Joyce Silveira Moreno, known professionally as Joyce and also as Joyce Moreno, is a Brazilian singer, composer, acoustic guitarist, arranger and producer from Rio de Janeiro. Born in 1948, she works within bossa nova and MPB, and is associated with singer-songwriter traditions in Brazilian popular music.

Career and style

Joyce is known for writing in the first person from a feminine point of view, and she is described as the first female Brazilian composer to do so in MPB. This approach becomes a defining feature of her work and influences later women songwriters in Brazilian music.

Recordings and influence

She has an extensive discography and has had around 400 recordings of her songs made by other artists. Among the Brazilian performers who record her work are Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, Ney Matogrosso, Edu Lobo, Emílio Santiago, Boca Livre, Mônica Salmaso, Leny Andrade, Nana Caymmi, Zizi Possi, Elizeth Cardoso and Simone. Outside Brazil, her songs are recorded by Annie Lennox, Wallace Roney, Omara Portuondo, Black Eyed Peas, David Sanchez, Jon Lucien, Claus Ogerman, Gerry Mulligan, Till Brönner and Flora Purim.

Film, television and other work

Her compositions appear in film soundtracks, including The Player and Legally Blonde. She also contributes to animation and other media, including the Japanese anime Wolf's Rain, for which she works with composer Yoko Kanno. Her music is also used in television and theatre.

Recognition and releases

Joyce receives four Latin Grammy nominations. Her catalogue includes 34 solo CDs and two DVDs, in addition to compilations and guest appearances. Her work also has an international profile, with performances in Japan, Europe, the United States and Canada, including regular appearances on the Blue Note circuit in Japan and at jazz festivals.
