Jet
Jet are an Australian garage rock band from Melbourne, formed in 2001 and active from 2001 to the present. The band consists of Nic Cester on vocals and guitar, Cameron Muncey on guitar and vocals, Mark Wilson on bass, and Chris Cester on drums.
Early releases and breakthrough
Jet first release is the self-issued Dirty Sweet EP from 2002, a vinyl-only record that sells out its initial pressing of 1,000 copies in Australia. The EP also gains attention in the UK, and an American deal with Elektra follows in early 2003, leading to a domestic release that May. The band then supports the Rolling Stones in Australia.
Their debut album, Get Born, arrives in 2003. It features the single “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?”, which becomes a worldwide radio favourite, and the album sells more than three million copies. Jet also receive seven ARIA nominations and win six of them. Other international singles from this period include “Look What You’ve Done”.
Later albums and touring
Jet release their second album, Shine On, in 2006. They tour Europe with Oasis in 2005, maintain a steady touring schedule, and contribute a song to the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. Their third album, Shaka Rock, follows in 2009. The band also tours with Green Day and Powderfinger.
Hiatus and return
Jet go on hiatus in 2010 and split in 2012, before reforming in 2016. They play headlining shows in Australia in 2017.
Style and place in rock
Their sound combines hard-edged rock with garage rock and alternative rock, drawing on a swaggering, old-fashioned style associated with the garage rock revival. Their other international hits include “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” and “She’s A Genius”.
