Jason Derülo is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, choreographer, producer and actor from Miami, Florida. He is also known as Jason Derulo and is born Jason Desrouleaux. His music is associated with contemporary R&B, dance, dance-pop, hip hop, afro house and amapiano.

Career

Derülo writes songs as well as performs them, and begins writing hit singles for other artists in 2007. Among the acts he writes for are Lil Wayne, Pleasure P, Pitbull, Stat Quo, Iyaz and Birdman. He is signed to JR Rotem’s label Beluga Heights, and later his listed labels include Derulo, Inc. and Jason Derulo Publishing.

His self-titled debut album appears in March 2010. The album’s first single, “Whatcha Say”, is released to radio in June 2009. It samples Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek” and becomes a major digital hit, selling more than 2 million copies, earning 2x platinum certification from the RIAA, and reaching number one in the United States and several other countries.

The debut album also produces two more U.S. top ten singles: “In My Head”, which reaches number five, and “Ridin’ Solo”, which reaches number nine. In 2011 he announces his second album, Future History. Its lead single, “Don’t Wanna Go Home”, is released in May 2011.

Injury and return to television

During rehearsals for the Future History Tour in January 2012, he breaks one of the vertebrae in his neck. When he performs “Undefeated” on the finale of American Idol in May 2012, it is his first television performance after that injury.
