James Maddock

James Maddock is an English singer-songwriter and performing musician from Leicester, and he has been based in New York City since 2003. He grows up in Countesthorpe, near Leicester, and begins his career playing in school bands before performing professionally at clubs across the Midlands.

Early career and Columbia Records

Maddock develops his songwriting and performance in London and records a demo session at Abbey Road Studios. That leads to attention from Columbia Records in New York, and he signs a deal that allows him to record with his band Wood. His debut album, Songs from Stamford Hill, takes its title from the area where he is living at the time.

Breakthrough and touring

The single “Stay You” becomes a top-five hit on the Adult Alternative chart. Songs from Songs from Stamford Hill also appear in the first episode of Dawson’s Creek and in the film Serendipity. Maddock tours in the United States with Train, Paula Cole and Meshell Ndegeocello, and also headlines shows across the country.

Later work

After leaving Columbia, Maddock moves to New York and signs an exclusive publishing deal with Razor and Tie Music Publishing. His band includes Spin Doctors drummer Aaron Comess and Ryko recording artist Leslie Mendelson. His releases include Sunrise on Avenue C, which wins the 2010/11 NY Music Award for Best Americana Album, as well as Jimmy & Immy Live at Rockwood Music Hall with David Immerglück, Wake Up and Dream, James Maddock: Live At Rockwood Music Hall and Another Life.
