J-Phlip

J-Phlip, also known as Jess or Jessica Rose Phillippe, is a DJ and producer from Champaign, Illinois. She discovers house music in her hometown, about two hours south of Chicago, and her sound develops from that setting: close enough to Chicago for house to have a strong influence, but far enough away to leave room for a broader mix of styles.

Style and sound

Her DJ sets combine house, tech house, deep house and techno, along with more unusual electronic details. The result is a dance-oriented approach that moves between genres rather than staying within one. She is based in San Francisco and works as both a DJ and producer.

Career

In 2005, J-Phlip wins the national DJ competition Beauty and the Beats, run by BPM magazine. That leads to a tour with DJ Rap, Colette and Reid Speed. She becomes established in Chicago’s electronic music scene before moving to San Francisco, where she also holds a residency at the Endup nightclub.

Releases and collaborations

J-Phlip releases music on Dirtybird, including a first release for the label titled “J”, and a track called “Rumble Rumble”. Her music is also set for release on Dotbleep and Alland Byallo’s Nightlight Music.
