Irônika

Irônika is a punk band from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, formed at the end of the 1990s and active from 1999. The group begins after Juarez Rodrigues and Bruno Luiz meet at a concert in 1999 and start working on punk rock ideas shaped by Jamaican rhythms. Its early period includes reggae and ska, with rehearsals and original songs developed between 2000 and 2001.

Formation and early line-up

The band first appears in April 2001 at a suburban high school in Belo Horizonte, with Bruno and Jôjô on guitars, Juarez on bass, Dian on drums, and vocals shared by Bruno and Juarez. Juarez leaves shortly afterwards, but shows continue through the following months as the group experiments with punk rock, reggae, ska and some rock and roll influences. One example of this period is the final ska version of “Buracos Suburbanos” (“Psykose”), which is played live with a strong swing feel.

In early 2002 the band stops briefly and plays a farewell show in March at the old Acme Games in north-west Belo Horizonte, with Juarez on guitar. Soon after, the line-up changes significantly. Georges joins in May 2002 on bass guitar, followed by Tiago and Cau between June and August on drums and bass respectively. The band returns in July 2002 with a more fully developed punk rock direction, while still keeping elements of reggae and ska in its sound.

Style and lyrics

Irônika’s music moves from reggae and ska into punk rock, while retaining Jamaican influence and the rhythmic and vocal forms associated with those styles, including ragga vocals and sing-alongs. The band’s lyrics deal with urban life, juvenile delinquency, alcohol, street culture, tragedies and the pleasures of disposable youth. Its broader influences include early punk bands, Two Tone, 1980s punk and Jamaican music, alongside the sarcastic and irreverent spirit of 1990s punk rock. The group name reflects that ironic, sarcastic approach to serious subjects.

Recordings and releases

In September 2002 Irônika records “Garoto Rude” with vocals by Georges, Bruno and Cau in an experimental form and releases it online, which brings local attention. In 2008 the then-current line-up records its first songs and completes the EP F... A Família Brasileira Tradicional - DEMO, a five-track release that also includes a video for “Libertas Quae Sera Tamen” as a bonus. The EP helps place the band in the Brazilian concert circuit and leads to reviews in specialist media.

Live activity

The band plays across Belo Horizonte and nearby towns, as well as other parts of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and the north-east of Brazil. Festival appearances include Tribus Festival 2005 in Teresina, 53 HC Fest 2005, Vans Zona Punk Tour 2006 in Belo Horizonte, and Grito Rock Latin America 2008 in Sabará. Irônika also shares stages with acts including Forgotten Boys, U.S. Bombs, Force Of Change, Defect Defect, Calibre 12, Ação Direta, Matanza, Os Pedrero, Carbona, Gritando HC, Porcos Cegos, Dead Fish and Angra.
