In Flames

In Flames are a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed in 1990 and active since then. They are widely associated with the development of the Gothenburg metal scene, alongside At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, and are one of the best-known bands linked to the international spread of melodic death metal.

Line-up and history

The band’s line-up changes frequently over the years. Anders Fridén and Björn Gelotte remain the only members present continuously since 1995, and after founding member Jesper Strömblad leaves in 2010, no original members remain in the group. Former members later form The Halo Effect. The current and former member list includes Anders Iwers, Johan Larsson, Jesper Strömblad, Carl Näslund, Glenn Ljungström, Anders Fridén, Björn Gelotte, Niclas Engelin, Peter Iwers, Daniel Svensson, Joe Rickard, Bryce Paul Newman and Tanner Wayne.

Recordings and releases

In Flames sell more than two million records worldwide. Their debut album, Lunar Strain (1994), features guest vocals from Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity and a number of additional contributors, reflecting the session-based approach of their early years. The Subterranean EP in 1995 leads to a deal with Nuclear Blast.

Their later releases include The Jester Race (1996) and Whoracle (1997), which help define their melodic death metal style; Colony (1999) and Clayman (2000), released after personnel changes and Björn Gelotte’s move from drums to guitar; and the live album The Tokyo Showdown (2001).

With Reroute to Remain (2002), the band shifts towards clean vocals and alternative metal elements, broadening their audience. This direction continues on Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004), Come Clarity (2006), which becomes their first number-one album in Sweden, and A Sense of Purpose (2008). Later albums include Sounds of a Playground Fading (2011), Siren Charms (2014), Battles (2016), I, the Mask (2019) and Foregone (2023). A 20th anniversary edition of Clayman appears in 2020.

Style and themes

In Flames use harmonised guitar melodies, a mix of screamed, growled and clean vocals, and keyboards and synthesizers. Early lyrics on albums such as The Jester Race and Whoracle focus on astrology and wider existential ideas, while later material turns to more personal and introspective themes. The stylistic change beginning with Reroute to Remain divides some of their audience but also contributes to their wider commercial recognition.

Tours and recognition

The band tours internationally and appears at major events including Gigantour and Ozzfest. Their place in metal history rests on both their early role in the Gothenburg scene and their later move into a more mainstream metal sound.
