Idiotape

Idiotape is a South Korean electronic group active since 2010. The group consists of DGURU, DR and ZEZE, and it works within alternative dance, dance-punk, electronic rock and new rave. Its music combines electronic and rock elements, with a focus on analogue synthesizers, live drums and dense rhythmic textures.

Background and style

The group develops a live sound built around experimental electronic effects, strong rhythm and a highly interactive stage approach. Its performances are associated with a shoegaze-influenced dance-rock feel, and its sound is described as blending rock aesthetics with electronic elements. The band also draws on the atmosphere of Korean rock from the 1960s and 1970s, which it folds into its material.

Career

Idiotape first gains attention through festival appearances in Seoul, including Pentaport Rock Festival and Global Gathering Korea, where its live shows build its reputation. DGURU is already an influential figure in the scene before the group forms and has an album titled address to his name. The three members develop the Idiotape concept together and present it as a contemporary fusion of their different musical approaches.

The band releases the 0805 EP before issuing its first debut album in 2011. Its performance at Global Gathering in the UK also draws notice, with the group described as a local act bringing audiences to their knees with one of the day's shows.
