Ian Cognito

Ian Cognito is an English stand-up comedian from London, United Kingdom. Born in 1958 and dying in 2019, he is known for an aggressive, confrontational style that often tests audience expectations. His act is built around wind-up material, deliberate provocation and sharp, bitter delivery, with humour that can mix social commentary, insult and crude jokes.

He is associated with a reputation for difficult behaviour as well as strong stage presence, and is said to be banned from more than a dozen comedy clubs because of his irascible conduct. His routines often play with contradiction: he may make an emotional point, such as speaking against domestic violence, and then undercut it with a deliberately offensive remark. This tension between seriousness and mockery is central to his style.

When performing well, he is described as particularly effective at turning hostility into comedy, with his confrontational edge setting him apart from a more commercial stand-up scene. At the same time, his drive to shock can sometimes place controversy ahead of laughs. He also uses lower-register material, including knob gags, as part of the act.
