Hot Snakes

Hot Snakes are an American post-hardcore group from San Diego, formed in 1999 and active until 2005, with a later reunion in 2011. The line-up includes Rick Froberg, John Reis, Jason Kourkounis, Mario Rubalcaba and Gar Wood. Froberg and Reis lead the band and had previously played together in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu, before Reis went on to find wider success with Rocket from the Crypt.

The band’s music is described as more primal than the work of Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu or Rocket from the Crypt, even though it shares some musical connections with those earlier projects. Their sound is shaped by influences from The Wipers, Suicide and Michael Yonkers Band, and one critic describes it as “hardcore garage punk”.

Hot Snakes operate in a DIY way, with Froberg handling the artwork and Reis releasing material through his Swami Records label.
