Hollow Coves is an Australian indie folk band from Gold Coast, Australia. The group forms in 2013 and remains active, with Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson as the members. Both contribute vocals and guitar.

Background

Ryan Henderson develops an interest in music in his high school years after attending Woodford Folk Festival and hearing performances by Angus & Julia Stone. He is then inspired to learn guitar and pursue music. Matt Carins grows up in a musical family in Brisbane: his father plays in a local cover band and writes albums, his mother plays piano and flute and teaches both instruments, his sister is a pianist, and his brother plays in an alternative rock band.

Recordings and recognition

The duo first records in a garage before later working remotely when Henderson moves to Canada and Carins to England. Their debut EP, Drifting, appears in October 2014. The single “The Woods” follows in 2017 and helps the band gain international attention. In 2017, they sign with Nettwerk and release the EP Wanderlust. Their first full-length album, Moments, arrives in 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Carins, who previously works as a carpenter, and Henderson build a production studio and a soundproof room for rehearsal and recording.

Musical style

Hollow Coves draw on artists including Angus & Julia Stone, Ben Howard and The Paper Kites. Their music combines acoustic melodies, vocal harmonies and reflective themes, and it reaches audiences through platforms such as Spotify. The band also tops charts including Hype Machine and THR’s Top TV Songs.
