Here There Be Monsters

Here There Be Monsters are a heavy metal group from Brighton, active from 2006. They emerge from the Brighton UK metal scene and form in 2007 from the break-up of Naked Ape and Risen. The band develops a reputation as a live act, touring in the UK and Europe and supporting touring artists including Exit Ten, Black Breath, The Mire and Animals As Leaders.

Style and critical response

Their sound combines hardcore, grind, screaming, punk-metal and down-tuned metal, with gritty, blues-based riffs and fast, restless grooves. They are described in press as a no-compromise metal and hardcore act with a distinctive approach that resists convention.

Releases and recordings

After a year together, the band records a demo that receives positive attention in the UK press and leads to a tour of Holland. In late 2009 they record their debut EP, Inherent, which includes Canine Vs Feline, Welcome To Barbados, Driven and Trojans. Trojans also appears on a Metal Hammer cover CD featuring unsigned UK metal. The EP is produced and engineered by Gez Waldron and mixed by Ace of Skunk Anansie. It is released in February 2010 on the band’s own label, Black Match Records.

Line-up changes

Nickel leaves after the demo period and later joins Furyon. Rich Langridge, formerly of Cast The Bones, joins in his place, then later relocates to Derby and leaves the band. Andy Parker, who has worked with the group for two years, joins as second guitarist, and Tim Herring comes in on bass. The later line-up includes Anthony Giles on vocals, Gareth Orchard and Andy Parker on guitars, Tim Herring on bass, and Peter Kelly on drums. Earlier members listed include Richard Langridge and Nickel on bass.

Later activity

In 2013 the band announces an indefinite hiatus. Its final output is a show with Brotherhood Of The Lake and Lands, which is recorded and released for free via Bandcamp. The group later reforms in 2016 to headline Mammothfest16 on the Rikstock stage.
