Harri is the stage name of James Harrigan, a UK trance and house producer and DJ from Glasgow, United Kingdom. He is closely associated with Glasgow’s house scene and with the Sub Club, where he builds a long-running reputation as a central figure in the city’s club culture.
Glasgow residencies and Subculture
Harri holds a record-breaking 20-year residency at the Sub Club, a run that helps establish the venue as one of the UK’s leading dance clubs. In the early 1990s he works there on Saturdays with Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle of Slam and Soma for four years. After Slam leave the Sub Club, Harri joins Domenic Cappello and together they launch Subculture, the venue’s flagship Saturday night. With Harri and Domenic at the helm, Subculture becomes one of the longest-running weekly house nights in the UK and hosts a wide range of international house DJs. Harri and Domenic are also credited together as Harri & Domenic.
Other residencies and touring
Harri also has a five-year London residency with Kenny Hawkes at Plastic People, which is regarded as one of the notable house nights of the 1990s. He regularly performs across Europe, the USA, the USSR and Asia, where his blend of house music attracts attention.
Production work and aliases
Harri records under several names, including The Pa Pa Washington Trio, Daddy’s Favourite, H Foundation and DJ Harri. These aliases reflect his work as both a mixer and producer. He also works with The Revenge, with releases appearing on Nordic Trax, Deep Freeze and Bosh, and he prepares edit material for Glasgow label L.E.S.S. Productions.
Notable tracks and label work
Under the Daddy’s Favourite name, I Feel Good Things For You appears in the television series Queer as Folk and becomes a charting track and a familiar tune on house compilations. As H Foundation, Liaka reaches No. 12 in John Peel’s Festive 50. His first single with The Pa Pa Washington Trio, Calling All Dancers, is licensed to at least eight compilations and becomes one of Paper Recordings’ biggest-selling records of 2002. On his own Tax Discs label, he scores three DJ Magazine Hype Chart hits in 2002/03, including two self-penned tracks and one Milton Jackson track.
Recognition
Harri is voted into DJ Magazine’s world top 100 DJs for two years in succession. He is also written about in The Face and other music magazines for his contribution to UK house music. He later works on a new Subculture mix CD for Soma and records a two-hour Essential Mix with Domenic Cappello for Pete Tong.
