Harper is a world blues singer and didgeridoo player from Guildford, Australia. Born in 1970, Harper also works as part of Harper and Midwest Kind.
Background
Harper begins in brass bands, first playing trumpet and euphonium before moving to blues harmonica. After turning to the harmonica, Harper develops a singing and songwriting style built around roots music and blues-based performance. Harper later moves to Melbourne and starts releasing albums that combine harmonica-led songs with soulful vocals.
Recorded work
Harper’s early releases include Tears of Ice, Yesterday Is Over and Live at the Soup Kitchen. Further albums follow with Glass on the Stepping Stone, Live at St. Andrews and Way Down Deep Inside, issued through Core Records. Harper then signs to Blind Pig Records after being spotted during a show in San Francisco. On that label, Harper releases Down to the Rhythm, Day by Day and Stand Together.
Style and instrumentation
Harper’s music draws on blues rock and roots music, with the didgeridoo becoming a regular part of the stage act after Harper explores indigenous Australian music. The didgeridoo is used alongside harmonica playing and vocals, giving the music a distinct Australian character.
Harper and Midwest Kind
Harper also performs as Harper and Midwest Kind.
