Guns Of Navarone

Guns of Navarone are a UK group playing ska punk, with origins in Coventry and Bedworth. The band forms in September 2008 and is led by singer and guitarist Gaz, who names the group after a Specials song. Their sound is shaped by influences including Green Day, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Ramones, The Specials and Dropkick Murphys.

Line-up and development

After the original line-up leaves in July 2009, Gaz continues the project and recruits bassist Xander from Bedworth, who brings a heavier punk edge to the band. In August, Tylar joins on drums and the group secures its first gig at Rosie Malone's Irish Bar in Coventry. Tylar then leaves to concentrate on his education, and Max, a grade 8 drummer from Bedworth, joins the band and quickly settles into the line-up. By March 2010, Kieran joins on trombone and backing vocals, and Doug joins on cornet and backing vocals, adding a brass element to the band's sound.

Recordings

The band records its first demo album, Sorry Man, in October. The title comes from a moment heard at the end of “Let The Riot Begin”. Two more demo albums follow: Garbage Day, named after a quote from Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2, and We’re Mature...and So Was Your Mum Last Night, a collection of covers, jams, joke songs and outtakes recorded during the making of Garbage Day. The band also has new material written, including “Scumbag”, “I Don’t Care” and “Double-Crosser”, for a planned demo titled G.O.N.

Live activity

Guns of Navarone play old school ska punk and perform in Coventry venues including Rosie Malone's Irish Bar, which they play twice, and the Kasbah, where they appear with King Hermit in February 2010.
