Grant Lee Buffalo

Grant Lee Buffalo are a Los Angeles rock band active from 1991 to 1998. The group consists of Grant-Lee Phillips on vocals and guitar, Paul Kimble on bass, and Josef Peters on drums. All three members previously play in Shiva Burlesque, another Los Angeles band.

Style and themes

The band’s sound combines classic pop and rock with Americana elements and touches of old-fashioned country music. Their lyrics often address political and social subjects. One example is “Lone Star Song” from Mighty Joe Moon, which refers to the Waco siege.

Recordings

Grant Lee Buffalo release four albums: Fuzzy in 1993, Mighty Joe Moon in 1994, Copperopolis in 1996, and Jubilee in 1998. Jubilee appears without Kimble, who leaves the band the year before.

Later activity

After Jubilee, the band break up. Phillips then pursues a solo career.

Touring

The band tour with major acts from the early to mid-1990s, including R.E.M., Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins.
