Goodnight Lenin

Goodnight Lenin are a West Coast Americana five-piece formed in the West Midlands in 2011. They work as an independent band and draw on a DIY approach associated with late 1980s and early 1990s grunge, alongside influences such as Neil Young, Jonathan Wilson, Phosphorescent and Wilco.

Releases

The band release two singles and two EPs, each of which sells out in a limited physical run. In 2014 they complete a Record Store Day project built around two Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young covers, “Almost Cut My Hair” and “Helpless”. They record, mix and master the tracks in 24 hours between Birmingham’s Highbury and Artisan Audio studios, and release them as a run of 24 7-inch records that sells out on the day.

Live activity

Goodnight Lenin play more than 60 festivals, including Glastonbury, Bestival and Green Man. They also tour with Dry The River, First Aid Kit, Stornoway and Beth Jeans Houghton.

Debut album

Their debut album, In The Fullness of Time, is mixed by Jonathan Wilson and released via Static Caravan in 2014. The same period also includes the single “The Reason”.

Style

The group’s sound sits within folk, indie pop and pop rock, with an Americana base and a strong independent, self-releasing ethos.
