Girl Group

Girl Group is a five-piece band formed in Liverpool. The group consists of Katya Madeleine Birkeland, Lily Kitten Christlow, Thea Tytingvåg Gundersen, Mia Gørvell Halvorsen and Maria Olsen Tollisen. Four of the members are originally from Oslo in Norway, while one is from Yorkshire in the UK.

Formation and background

The members meet during their first week at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and start making music together there. The band name is chosen to challenge conventional ideas about female bands in the music industry.

Style and influences

Girl Group describe their music as a blend of post-punk and alternative pop, and the group is also associated with crank wave, garage rock, garage punk and UK post-punk. Their stated influences include Lily Allen, Wet Leg and the Liverpool hyperpop artist MARiMARi.

Releases and label

The group’s tracks are released on Boys Boys Boys, under exclusive licence to Universal Music.

Context

The band aims to support women in music and create a sense of community around their work, with an emphasis on recognising women’s musicianship and creative roles.
