Gallon Drunk

Gallon Drunk are a London-based band formed in 1988. The core line-up consists of James Johnston on vocals, guitar, organ, piano and harmonica; Terry Edwards on saxophone and organ; Leo Kurunis on bass; and Ian White on drums. The original line-up includes James Johnston, Michael Delanian and Joe Byfield.

Style and recognition

The band is associated with garage rock, indie rock, psychobilly, alternative and rock. John Peel describes them as sounding unlike anyone else, and Nick Cave also comments on the band positively. Their 1993 album From the Heart of Town receives a Mercury Prize nomination.

Releases and discography

Their recorded output begins with the self-released 1988 7-inch single Snakepit/Please Give Me Something. Albums include Tonite...The Singles Bar (1991), You, The Night ... And The Music (1992), From The Heart Of Town (1993), In The Long Still Night (1996), Black Milk (1999), Fire Music (2002), The Rotten Mile (2007) and The Road Gets Darker From Here (2012). Releases appear on Clawfist, City Slang, self-distributed, Sweet Nothing Records, Fred Ltd and Clouds Hill Records. Their singles and EPs include Ruby, The Last Gasp (Salty), Some Fool's Mess, Draggin' Along, Bedlam, You Should Be Ashamed, The Traitor's Gate EP, Two Clear Eyes, To Love Somebody, Grand Union Canal, Bad Servant / Down At The Harbour and You Made Me.

James Johnston and other projects

James Johnston also plays guitar with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from 2003 to 2008, and joins them for their Lollapalooza tour in 1994. Gallon Drunk also continues to perform with Lydia Lunch in the collaborative project Big Sexy Noise.
