FYI Chris
FYI Chris is a London-based electronic music group made up of producers Chris Watson and Chris Coupe. Both originally come from Manchester, and they meet in South London through a community of like-minded music fans. Their work sits around deep house and club-focused electronic music, with a sound that develops from early collaborative sessions into a darker, rougher and more post-punk-leaning style.
Career
The pair begin releasing music in 2015, when their breakthrough record No Hurry / Juliette appears on Church. From that point they put out a steady run of 12-inch releases, building a catalogue of eleven 12"s and working through a number of respected labels in the scene. Their releases include music on Rhythm Section, Toy Tonics and Banoffee Pies, and they also record remix work for Ninja Tune.
Before releasing music as FYI Chris, the two build their partnership through informal jams that become more serious once they get access to an MPC, which they treat as a key piece of equipment. Those sessions involve a rotating group of friends and family, and draw on a range of genres and instruments. The project grows out of that shared social and musical world rather than a conventional band setup.
DJ work and venues
FYI Chris are regulars at Rye Wax in Peckham and help host the Rye Wax radio show. They also play DJ sets and live dates in underground venues internationally, including in Australia. Their activity is closely connected to London’s club circuit and to the Rye Wax basement scene.
West Friends
The group also co-run West Friends with friends from Rye Wax. West Friends functions as both a label and a platform for their own groove-led material and for genre-crossing music by friends. It is associated with industrial and macabre sounds, along with a self-aware sense of humour that runs through the project.
