Funeral Party

Funeral Party is an East Los Angeles-based disco-punk and indie rock group from Whittier, United States. The band is active from 2004 and forms as a four-piece in Whittier, with a lineup that later includes Chad Elliott on vocals, James Torres on guitar, Kimo Kahalua on bass, Tim Madrid on drums, and Dylan on percussion and keyboards.

Formation and early activity

The band begins in a Whittier park, and at first it does not own its own equipment, instead borrowing instruments from other bands at East Los Angeles backyard parties and warehouse shows. Its early recording sessions take place at The Mars Volta’s studio in East L.A. after engineer Lars Stalfors invites the group to record there, and those sessions produce the track “Chalice”.

Recordings and wider attention

Funeral Party signs to RCA Records. Its song “New York City Moves to the Sound of L.A.” appears in a Taco Bell commercial for the Doritos Locos Taco, bringing the band broader exposure.

Style

The group is associated with indie rock, post-punk, dance punk, indie, and dance-punk.
