Freyia
Freyia is a singer-songwriter whose music combines alternative pop, electronica, rock and folk influences. Her work draws on Scandinavian and Lappish traditional themes, alongside a strong interest in mythology, religion and Nordic vocal traditions.
Background and influences
She studies at the University of Foreign Languages and Literatures, where her final thesis is titled The Feminine Element in the Scandinavian Mythology. Her early musical training begins in childhood: she receives a harmonica from her grandfather at the age of three, then a guitar and a violin at the age of ten. She later sings with bands in Boston and starts composing songs.
Freyia also studies Kulning and Joik, traditional Lappish singing styles. These high-pitched vocal techniques strongly shape her music, which she describes through ideas of suspension, consciousness and shamanistic ecstasy. Her songs move from folk-based material towards more electronica-led arrangements while keeping traces of traditional sound.
Releases and reception
Her first single, Mist, uses the vocal techniques she has studied and receives radio play, including on BBC Radio 1. The single is released in fourteen countries and is remixed by Cicada. She later releases additional singles, and her debut album Reverie is recorded and mastered with eleven tracks.
She also announces the EP Wantage, which includes four songs, a radio edit, two remixes and an acoustic live version recorded in London. The release continues her focus on electronica and dance-oriented material, with emotive vocals and layered electronic production.
Other work
Freyia performs live in London venues and also launches her own fashion brand, FAE-Shion, after working at Dolce&Gabbana. She is also identified as Freyia Norling.
