Frankie Rose

Frankie Rose is a United States-born musician, born in 1979, associated with dream pop, indie pop, lo-fi, alternative, new wave, noise pop, pop, post-punk and rock. She first becomes known as a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist in Vivian Girls, and as a drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts. She is also a former member of Dum Dum Girls.

Early band work

Rose is part of the Brooklyn music scene, where her work in Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts places her in two of the area’s widely noted underground groups. Her role in Vivian Girls includes writing songs and performing as both an instrumentalist and vocalist, while in Crystal Stilts she plays drums and sometimes sings.

Solo work

Her solo project develops the sound associated with those bands while also presenting her as an artist in her own right. Her music draws on 1960s girl group music and Brill Building pop, alongside 1980s and 1990s noise pop. It is marked by ethereal vocals, layered harmonies, tambourines, bells and driving percussion. The style has been compared in spirit to The Aislers Set and Black Tambourine.

Releases and recognition

Frankie Rose releases her debut 7-inch on Slumberland Records, recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester and J.B. Townsend of Crystal Stilts. In 2008, Pitchfork includes her song “Where Do You Run To?” among its best tracks of the year. In 2010, she releases her debut album under the name Frankie Rose and the Outs with backing band The Outs, followed in 2012 by Interstellar.
