Frankie Cosmos

Frankie Cosmos is an indie pop and indie rock group from New York, United States, centred on Greta Kline. The project begins in 2009 and uses a number of early pseudonyms, including Ingrid Superstar, Zebu Fur and Franz Charcoal. Kline builds a large back catalogue of self-released albums and related projects before the act moves into a more conventional band format.

Formation and line-up

The group starts as Kline’s solo project and, for several years, performs live as a duo with Aaron Maine of Porches. By 2016, Frankie Cosmos adds Gabrielle Smith on keyboards and vocals and David Maine on bass, and later changes line-up again. The verified membership includes Greta Kline, Aaron Maine, Luke Pyenson, Alex Bailey, zebu fur and Gabrielle Smith. The current line-up in the bio lists Greta Kline on vocals and guitar, Alex Bailey on bass and guitar, Lauren Martin on keyboards and vocals, and Luke Pyenson on drums.

Releases

Frankie Cosmos releases its first studio album, Zentropy, in 2014. The second album, Next Thing, follows in 2016. In 2018, the group releases Vessel after Kline’s breakup with Aaron Maine and the formation of Lexie, a collaboration with Alex Bailey and Doug Bleichner of Warehouse. The fourth album, Close It Quietly, appears in 2019, with Alex Bailey established as bassist and second guitarist. Inner World Peace is also part of the discography.

Style and background

The act is described as American indie rock, with genres associated with the group including blues, indie pop, lo-fi, pop, rock and singer-songwriter music. Kline remains the central figure throughout the project’s development and recording history.
