Format:B

Format:B is a German electronic duo made up of Jakob Hildenbrand and Franziskus Sell. The group is active from 2005 and is associated with minimal, techno, minimal techno and tech house.

Background

Jakob Hildenbrand begins with bass guitar and develops an early interest in rock, jazz and funk. After spending time in Berlin’s techno clubs and buying records, he starts making productions himself, first using a cheap synthesizer and an Atari computer. Franziskus Sell takes piano lessons from the age of six, and a night at the E-Werk club leads him toward 4/4 club music. Three years later he gets a first residency at Subground Lighthouse Afterhour and further bookings.

Formation and early releases

Both musicians study sound engineering, and after a series of nights out in Berlin they form Format:B. Their first release appears in 2005 with the 12-inch Slaps. Further records follow, including Like A Techmachine on Highgrade, Vivian Wheeler on Stil Vor Talent, and the Split Pot EP on Opossum.
