Fokofpolisiekar

Fokofpolisiekar is a South African rock group from Bellville, South Africa, active since 2003. The band plays Afrikaans punk rock and is made up of Johnny de Ridder, Hunter Kennedy, Wynand Myburgh, Francois van Coke and Jaco Venter.

Overview

The group becomes known for controversy, largely because of its name, which translates into English as “Fuck Off Police Car”, and because of the lyrical content of many of its songs. Their work is closely associated with Afrikaans-language rock and punk in South Africa.

Releases and recognition

The band’s first EP is As Jy Met Vuur Speel Sal Jy Brand, a title that translates as “If you play with fire you will get burnt”. Soon after, they release Hemel op die Platteland, meaning “Heaven in the countryside”, which becomes the first Afrikaans song to be officially playlisted on one of South Africa’s English national radio stations, 5FM.

Their first full album, Lugsteuring, meaning “Air disturbance”, is produced by John Paul De Stefani and released in 2004. In 2005 they follow it with the EP Monoloog In Stereo (“Monologue in stereo”). The single Brand Suid-Afrika (“Burn South Africa”) appears in 2006, followed by the album Swanesang (“Swan Song”).

Live activity

Fokofpolisiekar perform at venues across South Africa and tour the United Kingdom in October 2005.
