Foetus

Foetus is the main project of J.G. Thirlwell, an Australian-born musician and composer from Melbourne who begins releasing work in 1981 and remains active. The project is associated with experimental, industrial, industrial rock, noise rock and post-punk, although Thirlwell’s work also moves beyond genre labels and is often described as experimental or industrial.

Project history and names

Foetus begins as one of several names used by Thirlwell across a long career that also includes Clint Ruin, Manorexia and Steroid Maximus. The first full album appears in 1981 under the name You've Got Foetus On Your Breath. From the mid-1990s onward, the main project’s releases use the shorter name Foetus, while other name variations appear at different points in Thirlwell’s catalogue, including Foetus Art Terrorism/F.A.T., Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, The Foetus All-Nude Revue, Foetus Eruptus, Foetus Uber Frisco/Foetus Over Frisco, Foetus Under Glass, Phillip And His Foetus Vibrations, Foetus Corruptus, Foetus Interruptus, Foetus in Excelsis Corruptus Deluxe, and Foetus Inc. & The Foetus Symphony Orchestra.

Sound and development

Thirlwell’s early recordings are harsh and heavily distorted. Over time, the music becomes more orchestral and symphonic, especially from Love onward, while still being created as a J.G. Thirlwell project, with guest musicians appearing on some tracks. One later album, Hide, develops this direction further and opens with an operatic piece sung by Abigail Fischer.

Collaborations and related work

Thirlwell works across several collaborations and side projects, including Steroid Maximus, Stinkfist with Lydia Lunch, Flesh Volcano with Marc Almond, Baby Zizanie with Jim Coleman, and Wiseblood with Roli Mosimann of Swans. He also produces remixes, often under the name Foetus. Beyond his own projects, he contributes to Coil’s debut album Scatology, appears on early Nurse With Wound recordings, and provides voice work for the introduction to Argyle Park’s Misguided.

Influence and media work

Foetus and Thirlwell influence later industrial artists including Nine Inch Nails, Pig and Cop Shoot Cop. Thirlwell also serves as Composer in Residence for Adult Swim’s The Venture Brothers, and a soundtrack album, The Venture Bros.: The Music of JG Thirlwell, is issued in connection with the series.
