Flying White Dots is the DJ and mashup project of Bryan, who has around sixteen years of DJ experience. He starts making bootleg mashups in 2005, and in 2006 he begins experimenting with combinations of MOR vocals and psychedelic music after being taught techniques by Eric Kleptone.

Releases and style

His first finished release is Staring At The Sky, issued around six months after he begins the experiments. The album brings together unusual pairings such as Carole King with the Flaming Lips and Nathan Fake with the Rolling Stones, alongside extensive sound effects, and it attracts attention in the underground scene. In 2007 he follows it with Into The Great Unknown, which includes Walking On Clouds, a recreation of the Orb’s Little Fluffy Clouds, and Your Poetry, which places Elton John’s Your Song over a downtempo track by Squarepusher.

He continues with 3D in 2008, described through its musical qualities as darker, deeper and more textured than the first two albums, and then CMYK in 2009, presented as his happiest album to that point. Alongside mashups, Bryan also plays uptempo disco sets using spoken word samples and sound effects.

Broadcast and live work

Flying White Dots receives early radio support in 2007, when Rob da Bank gives him first airplay on Radio 1 and later describes him as a favourite bootleg mashup act. Eddy Temple Morris includes him in his Bombs of the Year selection for 2006. In 2008 he warms up for the Orb with an audio-visual performance, and in 2010 he plays Bestival, where a set in the Wishing Tree draws a lively crowd.

Personal details

Bryan suffers a major hand injury in Cambodia in late 2009, leaving him unable to fully bend his middle finger, and then loses a close friend less than three months later. He continues performing and DJing after those setbacks.
