Flood of Red is a post-hardcore and alternative rock group from Airdrie and Glasgow in Scotland, United Kingdom. The band forms in 2004 and remains active. It begins as a trio formed through school and the local skate scene, then grows into a sextet. Its early years are closely tied to Airdrie and the wider Lanarkshire area, with that setting shaping the band’s identity and sense of ambition.

Background and style

Flood of Red’s early material sits within post-hardcore and screamo, combining jagged guitars, melodic and abrasive vocals, electronics and a heavy rhythm section. As the band develops, it broadens its sound, bringing in ambient and soundscape elements while keeping a loud, forceful core. The group also uses humour and self-awareness in talking about its background, including its working-class and post-industrial surroundings.

Touring and early recognition

The band starts touring only months after forming, when the members are still teenagers, and plays for very little money while travelling and living in cramped conditions on the road. Early shows and recordings build a following quickly. In 2006, Flood of Red plays with Enter Shikari, and over the following year the two bands share more than forty stages. Touring continues through 2007 and 2008 with artists including Enter Shikari, Madina Lake and The Blackout, and the band becomes known for energetic live performances.

Recording and releases

Flood of Red records its debut album, Leaving Everything Behind, in Baltimore, Maryland with producer Brian McTernan at Salad Days studio. The album marks a move beyond the band’s earlier screamo-leaning material into a wider musical range. Before the album, the band releases the single A Place Before The End on King Tut’s in-house label, alongside appearances at Download and Sonisphere.

The band also takes an independent approach to releasing music and chooses to sell directly to fans through bundled formats rather than follow standard industry routes. Its discography includes the albums Leaving Everything Behind and Throw, the EP They Must Be Building Something, earlier EPs and demos from 2004 onwards, and singles including Home Run, 1997 and An Hour Away.

The band’s line-up includes Jordan Spiers on vocals, Calum Doris on guitar, Sean McGroarty on guitar, Dale Gallacher on synth, Jamie McGowan on bass and Graham Griffith on drums. Other bass players listed in the band’s history are Jonathan Snee and Craig Ridley.
