Fists

Fists is a group from Nottingham, England, active since 2007. It forms in 2006 in the spare bedroom of the shared home of James Finlay, Theresa Wrigley and Angi Fletcher, with the three housemates building the project from an interest in home-recorded pop and cassette-based lo-fi music, including Joe Meek and Daniel Johnston.

Formation and line-up

After a run of early 4-track recordings and small live shows, the group expands to five members in 2007 with the addition of Joe Wrigley and Peter Conway. In 2009, David Biggs replaces Joe Wrigley on bass. Biggs also has links to Skull Tanker, Cuban Crimewave and Cult of Dom Keller.

Style and recordings

The band develops a sound that draws on several strands of DIY music from the previous half-century, moving between skiffle punk, country-tinted indie pop and drone-led psych/indie influences. Songs mentioned from this period include “6 5 Special”, “Cockatoo” and “Skit”.

Release history

Fists releases the 7-inch Ascending b/w Stag through Hello Thor, and also makes the song “Big Wave” available as a free download.
